2021

From Farrell Flat to Burra and beyond to Mt Bryan

Picture
The gardens of Goyder will be open on both Saturday October 16 and Sunday October 17, from 10am to 4pm.
We have some new gardens this year and hope you enjoy them.

Should you wish to stay for the weekend, Burra offers a wide range of accommodation information through the Burra Visitors Centre. They also have information on the different styles of cafe's and restaurants available.

You need a ticket for the password to the maps, you'll also receive all addresses, what's on in each garden and where the workshops are. Sent to you early October.

1 Bartlett garden

Picture
A relatively new garden owned by Kathy and Dennis Bartlett, but well worth seeing. Around the back they are developing their own little piece of paradise. The roses provide a good display for most of the year, much to the delight of the owners. This is a garden to watch and see how it devlops as time and the seasons go on. They are also keen on salvias, but have to be careful with frost sensitive ones.
Time has moved on and the garden is coming into it's own. This is a good example of a cottager style garden, with a little bit of everything from roses to vegies. Dennis is having a go at exotic fruits, meantime building a collection of shadehouse plants.
Dennis also loves to propagate, so he'll have plants to share with you, including own root roses.

Plants for sale and bird houses

2 Brooke stockman's garden

Picture
Living and working in the country revolves around family. This elegant house is home to the Stockman family who have a long and distinguished history of working on the land and breeding merino sheep.

The outlook from the house is gorgeous with sweeping lawns offering inviting areas to sit, walk or play. Brooke has put alot of hard work into creating the garden surroundingthe lawn. She carted rocks from a nearby derelict cottage to build the garden borders. Once that was done the fun could begin, filling in the beds with high performing low maintenance plants. The result is a garden of plenty with lush green foliage suggesting both privacy and coolness durring summer.

Each year Brooke adds another treasure to the garden to keep it interesting. Overall, a beautiful house and garden combination.

Brooke's children, ever enterprising, will have bags of sheep manure for sale, does wonders for the garden.

3 Jo Gebhardt's garden

Morning tea is on again - $5 Please bring cash NO EFTPOS
Those who came last year will remember the beautiful morning tea Jo put on, so pop in early for a yummy start to the weekend.

Are you wanting to drop into a farmhouse garden with beautiful extended rural views of paddocks and the Burra hills? While taking in the views beyond the fence, just look at the view on sunset, you won't see that in the city.
What a treat to take a drive on the backroads to find this striking property off the beaten track. Such a collection of plants from natives to roses, succulents and hardy shrubs with cool inviting lawned areas.
See the rose Pierre D'Ronsard grown to perfection in our drier climate where there's no drizzle to turn the flowers to mush

4 Graeme Endean's garden

Picture
Graeme's garden is rhe epitome of vegie gardening in a small area, take a walk ansd see all the different types of garlic he has, the variety of tomatoes chosen for hardiness and productivity.

If your doing Tori's workshop, you'll get to taste Graeme's food, sample home-made yoghurt with fresh mint and some incredibly morish Kasundi relish.

Love vegies then pop in to see Graeme. He's only been here for two years and has poured his efforts into growing home grown veg, harvesting, preserving and most of his vegie needs have come from his small patch.

Graeme is committed to looking after the environment and believes that caring and nourishing the soil will repay you tenfold.
Find out all about worms, see how his worm farm works and buy some to take home. Graeme uses worm juice regularly in his garden along with local animal manure. Results speak for themselves. Another of his projects is raising Capers, he's hoping to have some berries for sale during the weekend, he uses these in his cooking.

                                                                                     WHAT'S ON IN THIS GARDEN

Magic Little meals workshop - on both days, vegie fun and learning in a small group
Hear Tori talk about the productivity of One Magic Square, a square metre of bounty for your table. It's not the space it's how you use it.
Grow food and turn it into delicious meals, vegetables become the stars and definitely family friendly. Forget the tired old zuchinni slice and turn this vegie into tasty fritters. So many things can be done simply, encouraging kids to expand their food horizons and find new ways to tempt their palates. Tori's food regime,
Magic Little Meals, is gradually being rolled out through the educational system, helping us to make good food choices, encourage healthy eating, while at the same time helping our environment by learning how to use what we have and reduce food miles. Graeme Endean has worked as a chef for many years, he's a passionate vegie grower and knows many ways to prepare and present food from your home garden to your table. Register when you buy a general admission ticket.

5 Francis and Putu's garden

Picture
We have gardened here for 15 years now and over that time we have had to learn which plants survive -7deg C in winter and 45deg C in summer. Our pride and joy is the white wisteria which took seven years to flower & which seems to be at its best every second year. The big surprise to me, in dry old Burra, was to see tulips popping up in front gardens. For some reason we have had trouble growing roses but Zephirine Drouhin & Pierre de Ronsard have flourished. We love it when plants naturalise and our Johnny Jumpups & opium poppies pop up in the most unexpected places! Eremophilas grow well here. We source ours from the Pt Augusta Botanic Gardens. On warm nights over summer we offer dinner in the garden and it looks really magic.
White Cedars Cafe will be open during the weekend. If you would like dinner, they book out quickly.

A quiet and tidy entry, because it's all around the back where you'll find a rose garden that Elaine and John are proud of.
Climbing and shrub rose proliferate behind a beautifully tended box hedge and clipped balls of golden diosma. The roses have been chosen for their ability to flower for long periods. Most of them are in flower for months on end. The rose garden was designed by Alison Aplin from Mintaro.
The front entrance is being developed, the laveneder hedge is new and gives cheerful colour during the cold winter months. As you can see the growth is good for a hedge that only went in in 2020.
